News Stories From 2007:

IN SEPTEMBER 2007
Brazilian Beats
2bYou made some noise at a Samba drumming workshop led by Emma from local Samaba band, Arco Iris.

Pizza Night!
Meat feast? Veggie Surpeme? More cheese or no cheese? Every taste can be catered for when it's pizza night.

Would you rather...?
... have a head shaped like a cube or hair made of straw? Always a source of interesting discussion, a game of "Would You Rather?" raised some rather philosophical questions.

IN AUGUST 2007
The Simpsons Movie
A night at the cinema - popcorn, sweets and doh!-nuts galore!

The Last of the Summertime
As the nights draw in, 2bYou made the most of the evening sunshine with frisbee and quick cricket on Parkers Piece.

10 april 2007      Pool at Mickey Flynn’s…
Members and volunteers joined forces for a pool tournament, where, as usual, some games were more epic than others!

03 April 2007      Members learn how to relaaaaax…
With exams around the corner yet again for many of our members, we dedicated this session to chilling out.
Members and volunteers shared relaxation tips, herbal tea, chill-out music and a few yoga postures, all by candlelight.  Aaaaahhhh.

27 march 2007     Video night and indoor picnic
Food and film – a classic combination. The film of choice was “Beautiful Thing”… next time it will be “Imagine Me and You”.
Check out the “Coming Up” section to find out when.

20 march 2007      What’s your role?
A highly entertaining session using drama games to look at how we each behave in groups.
Were you the responsible one, always trying to keep the balance, or did you thrive on being impulsive and causing chaos?

February 2007     YPT gets funding!
Our Young, Pink and Talented Project has secured its own funding for 2007 – well done to those members who wrote and submitted the bid!
Plans are already well underway to make this year’s YPT bigger and better than ever. Email us to find out more about the group or how to get involved.

News Stories From 2006:

27 JUNE 2006     2BYou go back to nature...
On 27 June a band of intrepid travellers made their way to the previously unknown territory of East Barnwell Nature Reserve. We spent a happy hour with the lovely Iain from Cambridge Green Belt Project, pulling up weeds, learning about the beautiful surroundings - and trying to not step on the dozens of tiny froglets hopping about on the paths! It was a great opportunity to go somewhere new and unusual to enjoy a glorious summer evening. So much fun was had that we’re heading back there in September... come along if you can!

27 JUNE 2006     YPT... R U?
YPT (Young, Pink and Talented) is the youth section of the Pink Festival, Cambridge’s annual Pride event. With less than a month to go until festival day, planning is cranking up a gear to ensure the YPT marquee is filled with young, pink talent from around the East of England. There’ll be music, dance, art… and hundreds of pink cupcakes! If you would like to perform on the day, or just find out more, email info@2BYou.co.uk and we’ll put you in touch.

26 OCTOBER 2004     Civil partnership News.
The Civil partnership bill successfully passed through the order for second reading and will now enter Committee stage!!

Extracts of the speech made by Charles Hendry MP (Shadow Minister for Young People) during yesterday's Commons debate on the Civil Partnership Bill.

‘In my role as shadow Minister with responsibility for young people, I have met different youth groups throughout the country. Sometimes they have been working in inner cities, sometimes they have been involved in colleges and schools and sometimes they have been working with young gays and lesbians. The most shocking things that I have heard have been about the abuse that young people face.

I heard a young lad in Brighton describe how he was beaten up in the streets simply because he was out with his partner. He was not doing anything that anyone in the heterosexual community would find it difficult to do. He was beaten up merely because he was out with his partner. I heard from a young kid in Leeds who had suffered constant homophobic bullying in school. When he, as an individual, finally fought back he was the one who was excluded. That was abominable. He was the victim. Bullied children are always the victims and they need Members of this place to stand up for them.

As people grow up they might find that they face difficulties and discrimination merely because of their sexuality – something with which they are not able to deal. There are those who have to go through the trauma of telling their families and friends that they are gay or lesbian, as a result of which they are often thrown out of their homes.
In my old role as chairman of the all-party group on homelessness I heard of 16-year-olds who had been kicked out of their homes because their parents were not prepared to accept their sexuality. I cannot understand people facing abuse throughout their daily lives because of their sexuality. We are right to address these issues, and we must put a stop to them.

People who happen to be gay or lesbian and play a role in public life end up finding that they can be gratuitously insulted because of their sexuality. Brian Paddick is the Assistant Metropolitan Police Commissioner. He is a fine and outstanding police officer. I often feel that the media think that they can give him a kicking and criticise him because he is an openly gay policeman. Such attitudes belong to a bygone era, and the Bill is part of kicking them into history.’

27 July 2004     SexYOUality holds local conference.
SexYOUality holds conference for local professionals on "needs assessment" key findings

107 local LGB young people took part in a recent needs assessment to find out what issues are effecting them in the Cambridgeshire/Peterborough area.
A pocket guide has been published which highlights the key findings from the results.

A group of 6 lesbian, gay and bisexual people aged 16- 24 were recruited to become Peer researchers for the project and were involved all the way through from devising the questionnaires to taking part in the analysis and helping to organise the conference which took place at the end of June.

40 local professionals from a wide range of services attended the half day seminar which was used as an opportunity to explore local issues and come up with joint action points to try to start to tackle these issues.

It was a very positive day. If you have any questions on the needs assessment or outcomes from the conference or have any questions for any of the peer researchers email us on info@2BYou.co.uk.
